"Mondaufgang über dem Moorgraben (Moonrise over the Moor Ditch)", 1940
Oil on canvas
Expertise Rainer Noeres, June 24, 2011,

- with handmade craftsman's frame -
In this painting, Modersohn evocatively captures the shifting light between night and day by reflecting the shimmering moonlight in the water, and, at the same time, depicting clouds just above the horizon tinged with the red glow of the setting sun. In the cool, diffuse light one can almost touch the chilly, dewy twilight air. The path along the narrow stream leads to a bridge providing access to the farming community in the background, and refuge from the encroaching darkness.
