Modersohn Painting Fetches 80,000 euro
The sale at auction of a large-format painting by Otto Modersohn from 1897 fetched a price of 80,000 euro on February 3, 2018 at the Bremen Auktionshaus Weser.
Including the standard auctioneer's commission, the new owner will have to pay a total of around 100,000 euro. According to the auction house, the work titled "Herbstmorgen am Torfkanal" (Autumnal Morning on the Torfkanal) went to a collector from Bremen. The previous owner was a woman from Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania, who had inherited the painting. As the auctioneer Werner Schukat reports, the auction room was filled to brim when lot number 3000 was called out, and large crowds had even gathered during the preview period. "Many people probably felt that they should take a final look at the original before it vanishes into a private collection."
The bidding in the hall was accompanied by enthusiastic applause - for never before had an item of such value been auctioned at the Auktionshaus Weser. Also keenly interested in the sale was the Otto-Modersohn Museum in Fischerhude, which had originally intended to exhibit the work on loan, before possibly acquiring at some time in the future. However, their endeavours proved to be unsuccessful.
