About the work

From 1927 onwards Christian Rohlfs travelled to Ascona every year, accompanied by his young wife. The wonderful scenery and unique light conditions of the Italian mountains wielded a strong influence on Rohlfs' later works. His house lay on the Lago Maggiore, where in all probability the "Yellow Lake Landscape" was created. The gentle countryside is saturated in light, and although the colours appear rather muted and pale, they appear to glow brightly due to the effect of the transparent tempera technique, which infuses the painting with lightness and warmth.
