About the work

Completed when the artist Modersohn was 60 years old, the painting "In the Surheide" captures the late autumnal atmosphere of this heath and moorland, which has since been declared an area of outstanding natural beauty. In harmonious colours, the artists highlights the passing of autumn into the encroaching winter season by accentuating the contour of the ridge running left into the pictorial depth from the bottom right. The warm autumnal tones featured on the right side of the canvas are displaced by the winterly hues from the left.
