About the work

Heinz Mack was once referred to as a “poet of light”. With good cause, as he has been dedicating his work for many decades to the forms of expression of light with incomparable consistency and a constantly re-ignited passion. Again and again, he is able to capture its colourful poetry in his paintings.
The pastel from 2015 can also be understood as a homage to light. In a sequence of vertically arranged, irregular stripes, the artist unfolds the spectrum of refraction in the colourful segment from green through yellow to orange and red.
Already in 1958, Heinz Mack described the dynamic structures of his works in words that can still claim validity today: “For me, such a structural element is, for example, the certain parallelism of a large number of straight lines in a vertical or horizontal arrangement; the texture of such straight lines is endlessly variable; its principle is the simultaneous and periodical sequence of straight lines (the straight lines do not need to be precise). Each zone enveloped by two straight lines is an endlessly rich colour-form structure; I allow coincidence a chance in the creation process; the straight lines themselves are placed intentionally. The individual parallel zones change by degree from zone to zone, but also maintain their definite and shared character; in this way they begin to vibrate.”
