In 1948 Heinrich Siepmann co-founded the artists' group "junger westen" in Recklinghausen. His self-contained pictorial structure appeals both to the intellect and to the emotions as a balanced and harmonious entity. The images comprise geometric forms, whose colours and positioning are both carefully measured and subtly juxtaposed. Yet by virtue of the overpainting, overlapping and painted edges, they overcome their inherent two-dimensionality to conjure the impression of spatial depth. Thus the viewer begins involuntarily to fathom connections between the individual pictorial elements, and to divine the significance of each single part within the totality of the work.
