The painting "Spring on the Moor" depicts an undulating landscape with wind–swept trees beneath a panoply of cloud through which the radiant sun breaks, casting patches of light and shade on to the fields in the background. The foreground is dominated by the white, gossamer–like fruit of the moor's cotton grass. On the horizon, nestling on the crest of the hill, one can discern tiny houses and a church tower. And, as so often with Modersohn, the emblems of human civilisation are subordinated to Nature's seasonal manifestations of the elements.
