Throughout his life, Bernard Schultze was pre–occupied with the "internal creative process": "I wish to remain as passive as possible. With each step – and the entire process comprises an incremental number of steps – I wish to arrive in an unfamiliar situation, in a kind of trance, a focus on the act of creation, whereby the controlling intellect must always be ready to intervene." (Bernard Schultze, Migof–Reden – Texte und Zeichnungen, 1971, 68).
The artist first applied this technique just after the end of WWII: "Without ever having heard of Breton, I was at the time already working, 'under the diktat of the unconscious'". (cat. Bernard Schultze, "Im Labyrinth", Berlin 1980).
A clue to the artist's largely intuitive modus operandi is provided by the programmatic title of this present sheet "Traversing the Jungle of My Ego". Light structures executed in pencil and water–colour, possibly even adumbrating something figurative are superimposed by thin black lines and strokes. Appearing three–dimensional at times, and morphing into an impenetrably dense thicket, the composition also contains moments of destruction and interrogation. Thus growth and decay, the essential hallmark of Bernard Schultze's oeuvre, combine to articulate an expression of profound self–awareness.
