About the work

(...) And finally a few words on the small canvas "Tyrin" from the year 2000 and the five freshly–painted gouaches by Götz, dating from the years 2010/2012, which have been reproduced in this present catalogue from the Galerie Neher. The painting's palette – striking red and green tones and splashes of dark purple–tinted black – reveals that it was not executed in the 1950s, as the classical works of this period often featured black as the austere counterpoint to the chromatic hues. Here the structure of the painting has still been rendered with narrower brushes and a smaller scraper than on the more recent gouaches, which is attributable to the fact that until some 12 years ago Götz was still able to distinguish between light and dark on the painted canvas. Now, as the sight of the almost 99–year–old Götz has further deteriorated, he has the paint–soaked brushes and the scrape pressed into his hands by me when he begins to paint. We also jointly determine his repertoire of colours beforehand, comprising unmixed hues from the Lascaux bottles. Under this method, Götz succeeded in 2012 in producing astonishingly powerful gouaches which are unique, both in the ebullience of their colours and generosity of structure. These works demonstrate clearly that the master has lost nothing of his vigour, and has not yet given up.
