About the work
For the 87-year-old artist, 2002 proved to be a special year. In May of 2002, after having been a widower for three years, Bernard Schultze married his second wife Doris, who accompanied him in July during his annual stay at the spa resort of Bad Neuenahr. The optimistic spirit inspired by this matrimonial union is reflected in the buoyant colourfulness of this present sheet, which he completed whilst in Bad Neuenahr itself.
Characteristic of Bernard Schultze's late style, the work comprises an abstract patchwork of harmonious and complimentary colours. Bright luminous red hues interchange with light blue and contrasting darker passages. But instead of guiding the eyes of the observer into the depths of the labyrinthine spatial structure, Schultze presents us with an overhead perspective. Viewed in its entirety, this composition resolves into a meditative landscape painting, resembling an imaginary sea of flowers in which our eager gaze luxuriates.
