About the work

Already at a very early date, Fred Thieler limited himself to only a few colours. For this painting too, he used the limited palette of the pure colours typical for him, especially black and white, blue and red. They reveal themselves gently, almost like watercolours, and provide the gaze of the viewer with an excitingly experienceable colour space. Thieler always quite consciously always used " only five or six colours, with which I work right from the start. This means a certain limitation, but also a method for better control, depending upon how one reacts.”
(Fred Thieler: “Malen als Positionszeichen. Ein Gespräch mit Manfred de la Motte begonnen am 30.3.1980 in Beaune auf einer Reise durch Burgund” (Painting as marking positions. A discussion with Manfred de la Motte, started on 30.3.1980 in Beaune during a trip through Burgundy), in: Fred Thieler, edited by Manfred de la Motte, exhibition catalogue. Galerie Georg Nothelfer, Berlin 1983, p. 137–159, here: p. 137)
