About the work
Christian Modersohn painted this wonderfully bright watercolour in the atmosphere of the advancing twilight. The gaze travels over the flat landscape to a small row of trees, the colours of which transform into grey shadows in the twilight. Contours and details blur in the mist of the cool evening, while a virtually magical brilliance penetrates through the blue-grey of the sky, which is streaked with clouds.
Light and colour are the actual protagonists of this watercolour. It is these that interest the Fischerhude artist, who repeatedly made the water-abundant meadows near his studio the subjects of his painting. In numerous variations on the theme, he directed his attention to the variability of the landscape in the changeful light of the times of day and seasons.
