About the work

The bird trap or decoy is located within a nature reserve, situated near the village of Kampen on the North Sea island of Sylt. Originally serving as a place to catch wild geese, it became one of Sprotte's favourite destinations where he would often be found painting.
Sprotte' art is dedicated to capturing moments of great intensity - in all their various guises. Whilst the process of the work's creation is striking, its reception generates a profound emotional experience among the viewers. In choosing to depict a close-up detail for "Bird Trap", the artist is able to afford a deeper insight into the complexities of nature. For Sprotte eschews any representation of what he sees, and thus reduces the scene to its essence, and in so doing opens up a broad spectrum of interpretational possibilities. Despite the contourless painting style, the representations can in no way be described as transient or fleeting. Rather more they are highly condensed moments from which entire universes can emerge. In Sprotte's work, the image is more than a mere representation of what the eyes behold. It is the representation of the infinite abundance of possibilities.
