About the work

The radical reduction to black, white and grey demonstrates the full virtuosity of the artist, who subscribed to both the black and white spectrum and the theme of structures very early on. Here too, in his colourful pastels, fabric-like patterns play a vital role. To this purpose, the artist makes use of the frottage technique, a process with which the surface relief of an object is transferred to a sheet of paper placed on top of it by rubbing (Fr. frotter = rub) – in this case with pastel chalk. Heinz Mack uses wood relief plates in various versions, which he produces himself, for his frottages. With somnambulistic certainty, he is able to create an entire universe of structures and patterns, transitions and nuances between black, grey and the white of the paper beneath them from the apparent reduction and restriction.

A painting like this pastel requires not only precise observation, but also the willingness of the viewer to completely enter this multifaceted, black and white cosmos and to submerge into meditative silence, in order to be able to completely feel and experience its sublime quality.
